Coastal Garden, South Devon.22nd January 2016
The coastal garden rolls down to the sea. A limited palette, full of muscularity and tones from the cliff edge, with reflection from the sea and seaweed textures. Movement and the shimmer of light create a surging mass through which narrow paths weave. Immersion within the planting and resurfacing at cliff edge destinations, structured the plantscape. Compression and darkness are relieved by openings into light and air.
Walking through the space, you feel shrunk; briefly in an otherworldly moment. Held within the plants, they infringe your space; hard and defensive, deep in drifts, they envelope.
The planting drifts into the native stands of blackthorn and cliff meadow, blurring and lost.
The work has been an ongoing collaboration with Duncan Nuttall Nuttallgardens.co.uk
